Main Street Program
Main Street Reidsville was officially designated a Main Street Program in 1984. The purpose of the program is to assist the community in revitalizing the downtown commercial district through historic preservation. Through the North Carolina Main Street Program, the Reidsville Downtown Corporation can offer technical planning,organizational, and training assistance, and design assistance services for building facade improvements and maintenance. The fundamental organizational structure consists of a governing board and standing committees. Volunteers are coordinated and supported by a paid program director.
The National Main Street Center, established in 1980, is a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The National Main Street Center sponsors workshops and conferences, publishes training materials, offers a certification program in professional downtown management, produces the Great American Main Street Awards, and operates the National Main Street Network, a membership program that helps communities learn from each others experiences. Today the Main Street Program works more than 1600 towns and cities across our nation. The key to the Main Street success in downtown revitalization is the Main Street Four Point Approach.
Share our vision and goals by building consensus and cooperation among the many groups and individuals who have a role in the revitalization process. Involve all the downtown’s stakeholders in an attempt to get everyone working toward a common goal. Motivate and drive the volunteer-based Main Street Program, manage fundraising and recruit sponsors for all events. Keep the organization on a time-line to ensure a well organized and well managed volunteer-driven organization. This committee works very close with the Promotions Committee.
Selling the image and promise of Reidsville Main Street to all prospects by marketing the downtown district's unique characteristics to shoppers, investors, new businesses and visitors. An effective promotion strategy and a series of downtown events forges a positive image through advertising, retail promotion activity,and marketing campaigns. Community education to aggressive public relations are important to create community excitement and involvement. This committee works closely with the Organizational Committee.
Getting Reidsville Main Street into top physical shape by capitalizing on its best assets, such as historic buildings and traditional downtown layout is just part of the story. Enhancing the downtown’s physical environment by capitalizing on its best assets, such as historic buildings, and creating an inviting atmosphere through attractive window displays, parking areas, building improvements, streetscapes, and landscaping. The Main Street Program also focuses on instilling good maintenance practices in the commercial district, enhancing the physical appearance of the commercial district by rehabilitating historic buildings, encouraging appropriate new construction, developing sensitive design management systems, and long-term planning. This committee works closely with the Economic Restructuring Committee.
This committee seeks to strengthen Reidsville's existing economic assets in the downtown business district while also expanding and diversifying the economic base. By helping existing businesses expand and recruiting new ones to respond to today’s market, the Main Street Program helps convert unused spaces into productive properties and sharpens the competitiveness of business enterprises. The committee works toward business and investment recruitment, oversees incentive programs, advisory to new businesses and any rehab work. This committee works closely with the Design Committee.
The Main Street Program is under the direction of the City's Main Street Manager Missy Matthews and Economic Development Director Jeff Garstka.
